Refractory Brick Sizes & Dimensions — Standard Formats Reference

Dimensional reference for straight, arch, wedge and key refractory brick shapes, with guidance on format selection, tolerance classes, and order specification.

Refractory brick dimensions follow a small number of standard shape families — straight (rectangular), arch, wedge, and key (trapezoidal) — supplemented by special/custom shapes for kiln-specific geometry. Internationally, shape and dimension conventions for dense shaped refractory products are commonly referenced against the ISO 5019 series ("Dense shaped refractory products — Dimensions"), which defines standard straight, arch, wedge and key brick formats. Chinese national standards (GB/T series) define equivalent domestic formats and tolerance classes used across Zibo-region production. This page summarizes the shape families and general format logic used to specify brick for an order — exact standard clause numbers and full dimension tables for a specific order are confirmed against the product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS), since dimension tables vary by brick type (high alumina, fireclay, magnesia) and grade.

Use this guide to understand which shape category your application needs, then request the corresponding TDS with a technical proposal for exact tolerance-class dimensions.

Standard Straight Brick Formats

Straight brick (rectangular cross-section) is the base format for flat wall linings, floor linings, and general furnace construction. The most common reference format in refractory practice is a modular rectangular brick in the general range of 230 × 114 × 65 mm (length × width × thickness), sized to match standard masonry courses and simplify mixed lining layouts with insulating and construction brick. Actual product lines are offered in multiple length/width/thickness combinations depending on furnace geometry.

Common Straight Brick Format Categories
Format Category Typical Length (mm) Typical Width (mm) Typical Thickness (mm) Standard Reference
Standard Straight 230 114 65 ISO 5019 straight format / GB/T equivalent — confirm exact clause with TDS
Splitless / Thin Straight 230 114 40–50 Product-specific — confirm with TDS
Large-Format Straight 300–380 150–230 65–115 Product-specific — confirm with TDS

Dimension figures above are typical industry reference ranges, not a guaranteed dimension table for any specific Vuulcan product. Exact length/width/thickness, tolerance class, and applicable standard clause for high alumina, fireclay, or magnesia brick are confirmed per order against the relevant product Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Request the TDS for your grade before finalizing lining design.

Shaped Bricks — Arch, Wedge & Key

Curved and tapered furnace geometries (kiln shells, arches, burner ports, transition zones) require shaped brick rather than straight brick. The three standard shaped-brick families are:

  • Arch brick: tapered on one face to form a curved course around a cylindrical shell (e.g., rotary kiln lining). Taper angle is matched to shell diameter.
  • Wedge brick: tapered on the width dimension, used to close out circular or transitional courses where a straight brick run needs a gradual direction change.
  • Key brick: trapezoidal cross-section, used as the closing/locking brick in an arch or ring course where the taper of standard arch brick is insufficient.

Shaped brick is specified by shell/arch inside diameter (or radius) rather than a fixed dimension table — the correct taper angle and course count are calculated from the kiln shell geometry. Custom shapes for burner ports, thermocouple ports, and other cutouts are produced to drawing.

Dimensional Tolerance Classes

Refractory brick is manufactured to defined dimensional tolerance classes, which control acceptable variation in length, width, and thickness. Tighter tolerance classes reduce joint thickness variability and mortar consumption, and are typically specified for critical courses (hot-face working lining) versus backup/insulating courses where a standard tolerance class is normally adequate.

General Tolerance Class Logic
Tolerance Class Typical Application Relative Cost Impact
Standard Backup lining, insulating courses, non-critical zones Baseline
Precision / Ground Hot-face working lining, thin-joint construction, high-cycling zones Premium — reduces mortar joint thickness and improves thermal cycling performance

Exact tolerance class designations (e.g., specific ISO 5019 or GB/T tolerance grade codes) and their numeric limits are confirmed against the TDS for the specific grade and format ordered — tolerance grading differs between high alumina, fireclay, and magnesia product lines.

How to Specify Bricks for Your Order

To receive an accurate technical proposal and dimension confirmation, provide the following with your inquiry:

01 Furnace/kiln type and zone — e.g., rotary kiln transition zone, ladle safety lining, reheating furnace roof
02 Shell or lining inside diameter — required for arch/wedge/key brick course calculation
03 Lining thickness — determines brick thickness and course count
04 Grade already selected (if known) — high alumina Al₂O₃ grade, fireclay, or magnesia — see the grade selection guide if not yet determined
05 Tolerance requirement — standard or precision/ground, based on joint thickness and cycling requirements
06 Total lining area or estimated brick quantity — for quotation and logistics planning

Reference guide compiled from general refractory brick industry format conventions (ISO 5019 series and equivalent domestic standards). Exact dimension tables, tolerance grade codes, and standard clause numbers for a specific Vuulcan product are provided in the product Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and confirmed per order — figures in this guide are typical industry reference ranges, not a substitute for the TDS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Refractory Brick Sizes & Dimensions FAQ

A standard size is a straight, arch, wedge or key shape with dimensions and tolerances defined in a published reference standard (ISO 5019 series or GB/T 3995 shape/size standard), rather than a one-off custom shape drawn for a specific furnace. Standard shapes are lower cost and shorter lead time because they use existing pressing dies; custom shapes require new tooling and are quoted separately.

Bricklaying relies on consistent joint thickness (typically 1–3mm for refractory mortar joints). Bricks outside their stated tolerance class create uneven joints, which concentrate thermal stress and accelerate joint erosion. Tighter tolerance classes cost more to produce but reduce lining maintenance frequency in critical zones.

Yes. Vuulcan produces custom shapes to drawing for high alumina, fireclay and special-shape brick in addition to the standard formats listed on this page. Send your furnace shell drawing or existing brick sample dimensions and our technical team will confirm feasibility and lead time.

Furnace/kiln internal diameter or shell dimensions, lining thickness per zone, joint allowance, and any existing brick format currently in use (if a reline). See the "How to Specify Bricks for Your Order" section above for the full checklist.
